Managing Up Toolkit

You need something from someone above you: a decision, a deliverable, support, or the chance to disagree. This toolkit helps you ask clearly, push back respectfully, and build a working relationship that can handle both.

Managing up isn’t about managing your boss. It’s about making it easier for the two of you to do good work together, including when you need something from them or don’t agree with them.

This toolkit is in development. It will bring together practical tools for the situations that come up most: getting unstuck when a leader owes you something, deciding what to escalate, bringing a recommendation instead of a question, and disagreeing with someone senior without damaging the relationship.

In the meantime, the free Should I Escalate This? worksheet is a good place to start.
